چکیده

L ifestyle changes, in particular reducing energy intake, are the cornerstone of current approaches to weight loss and prevention of type 2 diabetes. However, there is currently no consensus that one dietary regimen is more effective than another for weight loss (1) or whether particular diets work better for identifiable groups of individuals. There is evidence, however, to suggest that both insulin resistance and insulin secretion play a role in body weight regulation (2– 12). Therefore, dietary factors such as the dietary glycemic load (glycemic load glycemic index [GI] available carbohydrate amount) that influence these parameters may theoretically interact with subject-specific characteristics of glucoseinsulin dynamics to influence the effect of different hypocaloric diets on weight loss or maintenance (13,14). Weight loss studies using the concept of the dietary glycemic index or glycemic load have shown conflicting results for heterogeneous groups of individuals (15–21). In a 6-month controlled feeding trial in healthy overweight adults with normal glucose tolerance, we tested the hypothesis that individuals with higher insulin secretion lose more weight when randomized to a low– glycemic load diet compared with a high– glycemic load diet.

P-148: Effect of A Low Glycemic Index Diet on Insulin Resistance and Reproductive Hormones

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disease in women affecting 5-10% of those of childbearing age. The majority of women with PCOS, regardless of weight, have a form of insulin resistance that is intrinsic to the syndrome. Obese women with PCOS have an added burden of insulin resistance related to their adiposity. Given the association of obesity and insuli...

Effects of different protein content and glycemic index of ad libitum diets on risk factors for diabetes in overweight adults after weight loss: the DIOGenes multicentre, randomised, dietary intervention trial

Aims/hypothesis: Diets which differ in protein and glycemic index (GI) may distinctively contribute to body weight control and metabolic consequences, especially those related to insulin sensitivity. Methods: In DIOGenes, overweight/obese adults in 8 European countries who lost ≥ 8% of initial body-weight following a low calorie diet (LCD) were subsequently randomly assigned into five ad libitu...

Beneficial effects of a high-protein, low-glycemic-load hypocaloric diet in overweight and obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome: a randomized controlled intervention study.

OBJECTIVE The recommended composition of a hypocaloric diet for obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a high-protein, low-glycemic-load diet compared with a conventional hypocaloric diet on reproductive hormones, inflammatory markers, lipids, glucose, and insulin levels in obese women with PCOS. METHODS A total of...

A Plant-Based Dietary Intervention Improves Beta-Cell Function and Insulin Resistance in Overweight Adults: A 16-Week Randomized Clinical Trial

The aim of this study was to test the effect of a plant-based dietary intervention on beta-cell function in overweight adults with no history of diabetes. Participants (n = 75) were randomized to follow a low-fat plant-based diet (n = 38) or to make no diet changes (n = 37) for 16 weeks. At baseline and 16 weeks, beta-cell function was quantified with a mathematical model. Using a standard meal...

Effects of dietary composition on energy expenditure during weight-loss maintenance.

CONTEXT Reduced energy expenditure following weight loss is thought to contribute to weight gain. However, the effect of dietary composition on energy expenditure during weight-loss maintenance has not been studied. OBJECTIVE To examine the effects of 3 diets differing widely in macronutrient composition and glycemic load on energy expenditure following weight loss. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PAR...
